Poverty!! poverty!! Why do people after struggling for so
many years remain poor? Can you or anybody anywhere say something about this
agitation?
I have thought seriously about it for long.
Why do some
people have to be condemned to the abyss of penury no matter how persistently
they struggle against poverty? Come to think of it, there are some physically
agile men, well educated with robust health, who eternally languish in penury’s
dark cell.
And yet there are others who for doing next to nothing
without tasking either their minds or bodies much remain darlings of the
goddess of wealth. Why? In all my years of searching for an explanation, I have
yet only a very weak answer.
Most men who are condemned to the chasm of destitution have
their parentage to blame. The factor is perhaps the worst, deciding on where to
belong. To be born in Family of appallingly poor parents is to have waged a
lost battle against many wicked enemies. There is malnutrition, illiteracy,
poor education, ignorance and well diseases may occur as a result. With these
hindrances forever near, a serious pursuit of a meaningful profession can be
ruled out but one has fallen into the class of hewers of wood.
Then watch it, choice is another factor making poverty
proud. That a man appears to be an incurable failure at work may not be due to
laziness; he may be indeed zealously hardworking. His crime may be that he is
in wrong profession, he made a wrong choice. Some men are destined to be
engineers but they go into politics; some are destined to be teachers but veer
into medicine. Once a man becomes fully trained in a profession, he can’t best
a retreat. And he remains a helpless mediocrity in that profession. After
choice, choice associates linger. One can’t choose one’s parents, but one can
choose a wife, friend, business associates and the like. This is where the mystery
lies. You can make a choice but can’t know in advance exactly how your choice
will treat you. To choose a devil for a wife is to be sentenced to a life long
anguish, the association will colour every aspect of one’s Endeavour’s and can
bring a partner down for life.
Think of a man like Abraham Lincoln for instance. He failed
at almost every human endeavor. He tried his hands at law, Business even
Politics. Undaunted, he tried the
Presidency. Not only did he win, he is
today among America’s best known figures, He is the one man who would have remained down there at the
bottom of the pit had he given up.
Why then should you give up? Poverty is not the ultimate,
but will be if you give zit room. Why?
Work harder, poverty will become a phantom to you. Do not postulate.
Poverty! Poverty!! Poverty!!! The bad conditioner of health. Surely you are overcome with fate of
modernity. It is never the ultimate, poverty! Never!
